Planning a Military Funeral
In the U.S., the rendering of Military Funeral Honors for an eligible veteran is mandated by law. Families of eligible veterans can request funeral honors through their funeral director, who will contact the appropriate military personnel to arrange for the funeral honors detail. While your funeral director will largely be responsible for planning the ceremonial aspects of a military funeral in Tacoma , there are some important steps that you and your family will need to take.
Request Burial Benefits
Benefits do not come automatically to qualified veterans; instead, they must be requested. You will need to complete and submit the appropriate paperwork for VA burial benefits. To expedite the process of requesting military funeral benefits, enroll in the Veterans Plus Benefits program and take advantage of personal assistance to secure the benefits which you are entitled from the Veterans Administration.
Request Military Funeral Honors
Unless your loved one is eligible to be buried in a VA National Cemetery, you will need to request Military Funeral Honors for a private ceremony. Every eligible veteran may receive Military Funeral Honors which includes the folding and representation of the U.S. flag and the playing of “Taps.” Arrangements can be made by your funeral home director, who will submit an official request to the Veterans Administration.
Request U.S. Flag, Headstone, and Service Medals
A ceremonial flag will be provided upon request to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran at no cost. To receive a flag, submit VA Form 21-2008 along with a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers. Eligible veterans may also receive a standard government headstone or marker upon request and at no charge. You may also request military service medals, award, and decorations from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC).
