Parks Appreciation Day
Please save the date so you can join us at the City of Lakewood’s 13th annual Parks Appreciation Day celebration, Saturday, April 26, 2014. We are planning projects at several Lakewood park sites. Join us between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon as we participate in the countywide Parks Appreciation Day and jointly celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day and National Parks Week.
You should dress appropriately for the weather; bring clearly-labeled hand tools from home (including such things as pruners, gloves, rakes, shovels, small pitch forks) and your enthusiasm, smiles and energy! This is a FUN event in the outdoors and you’ll be able to help prepare our local parks for the busy spring/summer seasons.
Projects this year include:
Fort Steilacoom Park — removing scotch broom. This is not a particularly exciting or fun project, but it is critically important as we prepare for the 2015 US Open Golf Tournament. We need more volunteers than ever before to help us remove this invasive plant
Also at FSP, volunteers will be tasked to help with restoration of historic cemetery markers and cemetery clean up.
At the FSP playground we’ll be finishing up some restoration work and we need volunteers to wrap of the final tasks on Park Appreciation Day.
American Lake Park — the swimming area will be cleaned up by the West Pierce Fire and Rescue Dive Team, and volunteers will help remove the underwater materials they find. General clean up of the beach sand will be included in this park project.
Wards Lake Park— trail maintenance and sign installation.
If a community/church group is interested in a specific park site and can provide the number of volunteers adequate to take on a project, the City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department will coordinate with them directly to develop site specific projects to spread chips under playground equipment. The City will provide the chips and some gardening tools for these groups. Firm commitment by volunteers would be necessary for these individual group projects.
Join us on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at 9:00 am. To register your family, service organization or your school or church groups, please call Suzi at 253-983-7758. We’ll find a spot for you and will appreciate your help.
