How Different Cultures Pay Tribute to a Loss One

There are a number of ways you can pay tribute to the lost life of a loved one.  Funerals, burials, and cremation services will vary based on the traditional values of the family.  Different cultures will commemorate their deceased in a variety of ways:

  • Jewish Funerals

In the Jewish tradition, a funeral is typically conducted within 24 hours of the death.  Customarily, the burial is attended only by the family members of the deceased.  Visitors are welcome during the Shivah, which is the Jewish seven-day mourning period.  It is traditional during the grieving period that the men won’t shave.

  • Hindu Customs

Hindu funerals are also held within 24 hours of the death of a loved one.  According to Hindu customs, it is traditional to cremate the body.  After the ceremony, the culture observes a 13-day mourning period in which friends can visit the family and offer their support and comfort.

  • Spirit Offerings of Southeast Asia

In Southeast Asia, it is customary to bury the deceased in the fields where they lived or worked.  The family also constructs spirit houses where they will leave various offerings, food, and beverages for the souls of departed relatives.

  •  The Day of the Dead in Mexico

Mexico observes Dia de Los Muertos on the 2nd of November each year.  They celebrate with friends and family to commemorate the spirits and memories of those who have passed on.  On this day, it is customary to visit the gravesite of the deceased and gather with loved ones over elaborate meals. 

  • Buddhist Ceremonies

It is the Buddhist belief that you are reincarnated after your death.  When they hold end-of-life services, they are celebrating the soul’s ascension from the body.  During the ceremony, guests offer their condolences by bowing before the casket.  The ceremony also traditionally involves meditation.
