How to Support People You Know Who Are Experiencing the Loss of a Loved One

Loving grandmother and granddaughter

When a tragedy happens and a loved one passes on, it’s not just the immediate family and friends who are impacted.  Those who know the mourning individual can aid in the healing process in a variety of ways.  Help support others through grief by following these tips:

  • Respect Their Wishes

Each individual grieves in his or her own way.  Some may want to be supported and surrounded by friends and family.  Others want to be left alone to reflect during the grieving process.  As long as there are no warning signs like substance abuse or extreme depression, it’s important to actively listen to what the mourning individual wants and try not to go against his or her wishes.

  • Offer Words of Comfort

Kind and helpful words can go a long way when it comes to healing.  Just as it’s important to share your feelings, it’s also important to be silent and listen.  It’s okay to talk about your own losses, but never say that you know how he or she is feeling, because you aren’t in his or her shoes.

  • Let Them Heal In Their Own Time

How long it takes for an individual to recover after the loss of a loved one varies.  The stages of loss and grief can take years and may dramatically differ from person to person.  Don’t put any pressure on the individual to move on, even if you feel like it is time to let go.

  • Offer Your Help

Immediately following a loss, the lives of many grief-stricken individuals become somewhat hectic.  It’s up to you to be the one who takes the initiative, as your friend may not feel comfortable asking for help.  Small acts of kindness like cooking a meal, helping with housework, and babysitting can help the heartbroken individual.

Helping with the funeral arrangements is yet another way to support your grieving loved one.   The experienced staff at Mountain View Funeral Home, Memorial Park & Crematory can help you and your mourning loved ones in a very difficult time.  If you’re looking for a full service funeral home and cemetery in Tacoma, then call (253) 584-0252.
